2017 Outreach Events

Engaging with the University and Ann Arbor communities

“FEMMES” (Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering, and the Sciences)

As a part of the FEMMES Saturday Capstone event, which brings over 200 middle-school girls to the University of Michigan campus, our chapter introduced students to Industrial Engineering and Operations Research principles through a fun, kinesthetic game where the students make decisions about how to make the operation of a hospital’s emergency department more efficient.

"Girls in Science" Camp

Our chapter members used the Emergency Department Simulation Game to teach 7th and 8th grade girls about industrial engineering and operations research concepts such as efficiency.

“Xplore Engineering”

We introduced elementary-middle school students to industrial engineering through a candy manufacturing game. The students had to manage and improve an assembly line to prepare and package candies.

University of Michigan “Discover Engineering”

We partnered with our Human Factors Engineering Society (HFES) and Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS) to introduce high school students to industrial engineering’s various application areas, including healthcare logistics (through a scheduling game, where we showed how optimization can solve difficult scheduling problems efficiently) and ErgOlympics (where students learned about various considerations in ergonomics and safety engineering through games).
